– Background –

Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer (1805–1877) was a German doctor, botanist, and malacologist who gave up his medical practice due to his scientific interests. He published works on cacti and was a member of Leopoldina and the Société cuviérienne. Pfeiffer traveled to Cuba with Johannes Gundlach and Carl Friedrich Eduard Otto, where he shifted his focus from collecting cacti to collecting shells. He was the co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Malakozoologie and published the first Flora of Niederhessen and Münden. Christoph Friedrich Otto was the inspector of the Royal Botanic Garden in Berlin-Schöneberg and the co-editor of the Allgemeinen Gartenzeitung along with Albert Gottfried Dietrich.
