– Background –

Gertrud Caspari was a German illustrator born in Chemnitz in 1873. She was one of the most significant children's book illustrators in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. She studied at a drawing school in Dresden from 1895 to 1898, with the goal of becoming a teacher, but she fell ill with Graves' disease in 1897 and was bedridden for many years. During this time, she came up with the idea for her first illustrated children's book, and her first book, "Das lebende Spielzeug," was published in 1903. She went on to receive numerous commissions for illustrations in children's books, as well as for schoolbooks and songbooks. Her style is characterized by large areas of color, simple perspectives, and bold contours, and she is known for her warm and vivid color schemes. While her work was praised, she was accused of collaboration with the Nazis in her later years, and she died in 1948 in poor living conditions.
