– Background –

Gret Palucca was a prominent German dancer and dance teacher who founded the Palucca School of Dance in Dresden in 1925. Born Margarethe Paluka in Munich, her family moved to San Francisco shortly after her birth in 1902 and returned to Dresden in 1909. She had ballet lessons and attended school before studying with Mary Wigman and joining her Chamber Dance Group. Palucca married Friedrich Bienert in 1924 and was introduced to the Bauhaus artists through her mother-in-law. Her school became a rival to Mary Wigman's, and in 1939, the National Socialist authorities closed her schools due to her Jewish ancestry. Despite this, she continued to dance herself and even appeared in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. She lost all her possessions during an air raid on Dresden in 1945 but continued to train dancers in the Russian style of ballet. Palucca was a founding member of the East German Academy of Arts and briefly went to West Germany in 1959 to gain support for her school's preservation. She died in Dresden in 1993 at the age of 91 and was buried on Hiddensee, where she had been spending her annual summer vacations since 1948.
