– Background –Franz Ludwig Güssefeld was a Prussian cartographer, born on December 6, 1744 in Osterburg and died on June 17, 1808 in Weimar. As a young man, he showed a talent for drawing and an interest in geography and maps. He worked with Baudirektor Hahn and J.J. Petris on the measurement of the Netze-Bruch, which was the basis for the later drainage of the area. He became a well-known and productive cartographer in the second half of the 18th century, publishing more than 100 maps famous for their accuracy, including a map of Brandenburg published by Homanns Erben. In 1808, he began working for the Landes-Industrie-Comptoir and Geographische Institut von Bertuch in Weimar. |
