– Background –Lothar Meggendorfer was a German artist, children's book author, painter, draftsman, and illustrator. He studied at the Royal Academy of Munich and began contributing to publications like Fliegende Blätter and Münchener Bilderbogen. He created about 150 books, including movable picture books with intricate paper mechanics. Meggendorfer is considered a pioneer of this genre and is still influential today. He also worked with other artists as a cartoonist for the Sunday edition of the Chicago Tribune in 1906. Meggendorfer's work was popular in Germany, and many of his books were translated and successful in England and America. He passed away in Munich on July 7, 1925.
