– Background –Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) was an Austrian poet who wrote in German and French. He gained popularity with his Hours Book, which contains reflective and often religious poems. His generally accessible, sometimes ecstatic, sometimes melancholic verses shaped the image of the prophetic poet and he is considered one of the most important poets of literary modernism. He also wrote narratives, including The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, and numerous essays on art and culture, as well as translations of French literature. His extensive correspondence with other writers and thinkers of his time is an important part of his literary work. |
