– Background –Johann Ludwig Tieck, often just Ludwig Tieck, was a German writer, poet, editor, and translator of the Romanticism era, who was born on May 31, 1773, in Berlin and died on April 28, 1853, in the same city. Tieck studied history, philology, and literature at Halle, Göttingen, and Erlangen, where he met Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder. He wrote his first poems during his school years and had a keen interest in Shakespeare. After breaking off his studies in 1794, he started writing for Straußfedern, a collection of entertaining literature and literary experiments. He also published his first stories and novels, such as Peter Lebrecht, William Lovell, and Abdallah, which marked his transition to Romanticism. In 1797, he released the book Volksmärchen von Peter Lebrecht, a collection of folk tales and myths that laid the foundation for the romantic novels of his time. Tieck lived in Jena from 1799 to 1800, where he became friends with Friedrich Schlegel and other prominent writers of the time. He then moved to Dresden in 1801 and Ziebingen in 1802, where he lived until 1819, except for a few longer trips. Tieck is known for his contribution to the literary examples of Friedrich Schlegel's theories, as well as for his own literary works. |
