– Background –

Molière was the stage name of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, a French playwright, actor, and poet who lived from 1622 to 1673. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the French language and world literature, known for his comedies, farces, tragicomedies, comédie-ballets, and more. Born into a prosperous family and having studied at the Collège de Clermont, Molière honed his comedic abilities as an itinerant actor before combining Commedia dell'arte elements with the more refined French comedy. He gained patronage from aristocrats including Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, and performed for King Louis XIV, earning the use of the theatre in the Palais-Royal and a royal pension for his troupe. Despite his success, Molière's satires attracted criticism from some, such as the Catholic Church in France, and his hard work in so many theatrical capacities took a toll on his health. He died in 1673 during a production of his final play, The Imaginary Invalid. Today, his plays are translated into every major living language and performed at the Comédie-Française more often than those of any other playwright.
