– Background –

Anton Friedrich Büsching was a geographer, historian, educator, and theologian born in Stadthagen in Schaumburg-Lippe in 1724, who died in Berlin in 1793. Büsching became known for his "Erdebeschreibung", the first geographical work with scientific value. He noticed a lack of accuracy in geographical science and decided to dedicate himself to this area. In 1752, he published his description of the counties of Schleswig and Holstein, as the first example of many other works. His works in geography, history, education, and religion would ultimately include more than a hundred books. However, Büsching's reputation is mainly based on his geographical works, which distinguished him as the creator of statistical geography. In addition, he was the editor of the collections "Magazin für die neue Historie und Geographie" and "Wöchentliche Nachrichten von neuen Landkarten". Büsching's writings and example gave new impetus to education throughout Prussia, and the government valued the worth of his services so highly that it allowed his extensive correspondence to be sent postage-free. He also wrote a number of biographical articles for the "Magazin," as well as "Beiträge zur Lebensgeschichte merkwürdiger Personen", including an elaborate life of Frederick the Great. He also attempted theological writings, though with less success.
