– Background –

Leo Tolstoy was a Russian writer born in 1828 to an aristocratic family. He is considered one of the greatest authors of his time. Notable works include the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, which are often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. Despite being nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906, and for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902, and 1909, Tolstoy never won, causing controversy. In the 1870s, Tolstoy experienced a moral crisis followed by a spiritual awakening, which led to his becoming a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in works such as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, had a profound impact on 20th-century figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Tolstoy was also a dedicated advocate of Georgism, which he incorporated into his writing. For his views on religion, he was excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church.
