– Background –

Goethe was a German poet and naturalist. Born into a respected bourgeois family in Frankfurt am Main, he received an extensive education from private tutors. After studying law in Leipzig and Strasbourg, he worked as a lawyer in Wetzlar and Frankfurt while pursuing his passion for poetry. He achieved literary success with his works "Götz von Berlichingen" and "The Sorrows of Young Werther," which are associated with the literary movement of Sturm und Drang. At the age of 26, he was invited to the court of Weimar, where he served as a friend and minister to the Duke and held political and administrative positions. He also led the Weimar Court Theatre for a quarter of a century. Goethe's extensive literary work includes poetry, drama, epic, autobiographical, art and literary theory, as well as scientific writings. He is considered one of the most significant creators of German-language literature and was a key figure in the Sturm und Drang movement and Weimar Classicism. His works, including "Faust" and "The Sorrows of Young Werther," have become classics of world literature. In the German Empire, he was idealized as the national poet and representative of the German spirit and became a symbol of German nationalism.
