– Background –

Albert Siegfried Jacob Eulenburg (1840–1917) was a German physician and sex researcher. He studied at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin under several renowned professors, including Rudolf Virchow, before working as an assistant surgeon in Greifswald. Eulenburg served as a physician in both the German and Franco-Prussian wars, after which he was dismissed from the university due to an alleged "malicious intrigue." He subsequently founded a private clinic and worked as a professor of pharmacology in Greifswald before returning to Berlin as a private lecturer and establishing a private practice for nervous diseases. Eulenburg's research on the physiology of nervous diseases and sexual medicine was highly regarded, and he is considered one of the pioneers in the field. The "Real-Encyclopädie der gesammten Heilkunde", edited by Eulenburg – the first edition was published in 1880 – is considered one of the standard medical works of its time and still provides insight into the state of medicine at that time.
