Jean Bungartz was a German animal painter, author, and illustrator of numerous animal books and photographs. He was born in Cologne in 1854 and married Maria Burmehl in 1875. In the early 1880s, he worked as a animal painter and editor in Hamburg and founded the Hamburg Association for the Promotion of Purebred Dogs. In 1886, he moved with his family to Lechenich, where he established a training and breeding facility for dogs. He founded the German Association for Health Dogs in 1893 and trained dogs for the Red Cross to locate wounded soldiers on the battlefield. He published books on various animals, including chickens, pigeons, cats, rabbits, and African wildlife in Namibia. Bungartz was internationally famous for his detailed animal paintings.
