– Background –

Rudolf Georg Binding was a German writer, born on August 13, 1867 in Basel, Switzerland, and died on August 4, 1938 in Starnberg, Germany. He was the son of wealthy parents, and his father was a well-known criminal law professor. Binding studied law and medicine in Tübingen, Heidelberg, and Berlin, but he was more interested in writing and horse racing, becoming a jockey and horse breeder. Binding was a captain and staff officer during World War I. His first works as a freelance writer were published after the war and consisted primarily of short stories, autobiographical narratives, and legends. Binding was a nationalist and glorified the "masculine-soldierly spirit" in his descriptions of war experiences. His works were popular and respected during the Weimar Republic period, and he was considered one of the authors of the Conservative Revolution. For the Nazi regime, Binding, who belonged to an elitist and upper-middle-class group of authors, was an important propaganda tool. Despite being never a member of the National Socialist party, he willingly allowed himself to be used as a figurehead for Nazi Germany. On August 4, 1938, Binding died of tuberculosis at the age of 70 in Starnberg.
